I found this recipe on Pinterest. It originally came from here. This was so easy and everyone liked it, including the boys, who sometimes only want to eat frozen bean burritos’ for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Sorry about the photo, it doesn’t look as good as it tasted. It actually looks kind of like something the AH once threw up. Sorry that was gross, but it’s true. That’s why I can no longer eat at KFC it creates a flashback. An overload of the senses.
Anyway, got sidetracked there, it was good. You should make it. I’ve made a few other things I’ve found on Pinterest, so far all good.
Here’s the recipe.
Slow-Cooker Chicken and Dumplings
1lb of Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts
2 Tablespoons Butter
2 cans (10.5oz) Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup
1 can (14oz) Chicken Broth
1 medium White Onion, diced
4 Large Flaky Refrigerator Biscuits (half a can)
Place thawed chicken in crockpot. Top with butter add cream of chicken soup, chicken broth and onions. Cook on high 4-6 hours or on low for 8 hours.
After the chicken has cooked for the proper amount of time cut each biscuit into small pieces(appox. 9 each). Add biscuits and continue to cook 30 mins to an hour longer, or until the biscuits are done. It took an hour in my crockpot.
Remove chicken and shred. After shredded place chicken back into crockpot and mix. Serve hot.
Serves 6-8.
Since this is the post that first brought me to your site, I am making this today!
Let me know if you liked it! I made it the other day, it was still good.
Oh my……..delicious! My mom used to make the BEST chicken and dumplings and this was just as good. My husband and daughter loved it!
Absolutely delicious!! I have never been able to recreat my moms recipe and this took me home!!! Everyone loved it!
Im so glad your family enjoyed it!
I am making this yummy looking dinner as we speak. It is a great base for chicken & dumplings. Instead of the can biscuits though I will be adding frozen dumplings at the end. I will probbly add veggies to half the chicken as my DH is like a kid and picks them out! ArgHHHH!!!! Can’t wait till dinner rools around. Thanks for posting!
can I use Auntie annes frozen flat dumplings instead of biscuits
I’ve never used them so im not sure. Anyone else used frozen dumplings in place of biscuits.
I love this recipe; so easy and I use the whole can of 6 biscuits, grand flaky is what I love. It does take an hour for the dumplings to cook. do not stir either, then check in 40 mins or so and then I stir. If you stir they stick to spoon. My family and friends love this.
On a floured surface, roll the biscuits flat and cut into strips before dropping into the liquid. The flour will keep them from sticking and they will cook faster if they are thin.
I am making this now. Smells delicious. I added carrots, celery, and potatoes to mine. Also added Tastefully Simple Rustic Herb seasoning. Yummy!
It was so good! I made it because my hubby likes chicken & dumplings, but I was so impressed that I went back for seconds. Super easy too! Thanks!
Good! So glad you liked it. 🙂
This recipe just went into my crockpot. Can’t wait, and I love easy recipes. 🙂
Great! Let us know if you liked it. I love crockpot recipes!
Well my husband and I drive a big truck, for coast to coast . And we hate stopping to eat at a truck stop… Its like all there food taste the same . So I bought a slow cooker a year a go . I make our meal in our truck . I love chicken and dumpling I have bought the frozen one and I would of like got sick , I seen this on Pinterest and thought I am going to give it a try. So today went food shopping. And this week I am going to try it .And I will for sure let you know what I think … Thank You For Sharing…
DEB
I hope it’s something you and your husband like. I can imagine it gets so tiring eating out all the time. Thanks for commenting! 🙂
Let me know how this works out in your truck. My husband and I drive a big truck to and just like you we are not fond of truck stop food. I have made stuff at home ( lasagna and things like that and put them in a vacuum sealers to reheat in the micro wave. ) but the crock pot would be nice to.
Thanks
Made this tonight and it was great!I added some frozen mixed vegetables to give it some more nutrition and color.
Glad you liked it! Maybe next time I’ll add vegetables. It would be a good addition.
Thanks for commenting.
When did you add the mixed vegetables?
I’ve not added veggies to mine yet, but plan to next time. I was just going to add them at the start.
Anyone else what to chime in?
If they are frozen mixed veggies I would add them about 30 mins or so before serving I added frozen pees near the end but chopped some fresh carrots an added those in the beginning because they take a while to cook and were bigger in size. Hope this helped
do you think it would work to double the recipe?
I don’t see why you couldn’t. Just more goodness to eat. 🙂
I doubled it and it turned out great. The bisquits do need an hour to cook. The leftovers were great too!
Have you ever had this as a leftover? The hubby works tonight I want to make sure if I make it that it’ll taste just as good tomorrow night. My husband loves chicken and dumplings so I’d like to surprise him! 🙂
I have had it as a left over. It was still good but I was a bit bugged by the dumplings the second day though sometimes I have texture issues with food. The hubs had no issues with it the second day and said it was just as good as the first day.
I made this tonight and the boyfriend fell in love with me all over again. It was to die for. Thanks for making me a culinary goddess.
So glad you both liked it! Pinterest has made cooking much more enjoyable for me.
what’s a refrigerator biscuit?!?!
Refrigerator biscuits are basically a cardboard tube full of round dough. When cooked they are round and fluffy, kind of like the consistency of a scone.
crescent roll type deals? cool, this recipe looks awesome!!! i’m on the hunt for slow cooker recipe
They are packaged like crescent rolls but are called biscuits.

Made this tonight and omg it’s so good…..Thank you so much for this delicious recipe….we love it!!!!
I’m so glad you liked it! It’s something easy but good. Thanks for letting me know you liked it.
Has anyone used frozen chicken breasts? Many times I’ve put frozen into the crock pot and it comes out just fine…just wondering what the difference would be here? Maybe the water content? I’m thawing mine out now, but before I quit and just threw them in, I figured I’d check in and see if anyone else did that too?
Yes! I’ve used frozen before. It’s turned out just fine with frozen chicken.
I use frozen chicken tenderloins and use more because we love chicken. I also use instant onions. great favor.
Thanks for letting us know you liked it and for the great suggestions! 🙂
What are refrigerator biscuits?like ready to roll cookie dough or something? I’m in Australia and don’t have anything like that here is there something else to substitute it?
Hi Aly,
I’ve tried to look up what you call in Australia what we consider biscuits here in America. You might call them bikkies. I don’t know if that is correct or not, but here a biscuit contains yeast or baking powder. I also saw that you might call them a dinner roll as well. I hope that helps.
Here we can get them in the refrigeration aisle of the grocery store. They come in a cardboard tube and are full of round dough.
I spent 5 weeks in Australia in 2001. It took me about a week to figure out that scones there are very similar to our biscuits
What would you serve this with?
I don’t serve it with anything else. Just in a bowl with some pepper and a little salt on top. It makes enough for our family for it to be the whole meal.
I suppose you could serve it with some vegetable or put the vegetable in to the crockpot. Maybe peas or carrots. I might do that myself next time.
We serve it over the top of mashed potatoes as well… Carbs! 🙂
Yum! I will have to try this if sound delicious. I love carbs!!
I made a side salad with mine…Rounded out to be a great meal…Instead of canned biscuits I took Bisquick and made it like biscuits and just dropped the dough in the pot..worked just fine and tasted amazing….
I fix mashed pototoes and corn or green beans. Complete meal. Love this recipe! I also use chicken tenderloins instead of the breast. Both are great!
Green beans, cornbread and sweet tea!
I serve on top of egg noodles 🙂
I’m planning on trying this on Sunday. Hope my family likes it. Little worried about the cooking time though in the past when I follow the cooking times they are off and the food comes out burned or over cooked. But I’m going to try.
Do you put the biscuits in raw???
Yes put them in raw.
Thank you. I made this today. I doubled the recipe and added a can of corn. It was delicious but I wanted to say I will turn the crock pit on high for the bisquits the last hour next time a make it. Mine were kinda doughy.
Glad you liked it. I’ve had my biscuits be doughy once. I did turn it up that time and cooked them longer. Thanks for commenting!!
Crock POT* & Biscuits*
This recipe sounds delicious!! What do you mean by “crockpot top”? I don’t understand what that means exactly…
That means I made a grammatical error! 🙂 I’ve fixed it now.
Tonight is my second time making this. we love it!! Thanks for the share
Do i add water? if so how much?
I don’t add water. The chicken makes some juice and there is chicken broth in it as well. If you wanted to make it thinner, then you could add water or some more chicken broth. We like it kind of thick here.
What about using frozen dumplings instead of biscuits? Like frozen egg noodles but in dumpling form?
I think that would work. If you try it let us know.
just had this for dinner (Lunch) with home made herb dumplings, just one question what are
Large Flaky Refrigerator Biscuits? It must be one of those things that have no corresponding
counterpart in the UK .
You might call them rolls, not sure, but here they come in a cardboard tube and are full of round dough. You can make the from scratch as well.
Ok , i know what you mean now. Pilsbury tried to sell those over here in the early eighties did not sell to well ok as a gimmick item. I’d rather do dumplings from scratch I usually use use this recipe,
1 cup self-raising flour
2 cups fresh white breadcrumbs
100g vegetarian suet
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 small bunch mixed fresh herbs, such as chives, thyme and parsley, finely chopped
2 eggs
1. Put the flour, breadcrumbs, suet, chopped herbs, and seasoning into a large bowl, mix thoroughly, and then make a well in the centre.
2. Beat the eggs lightly with a fork and pour into the well. Mix with a fork, bringing dry ingredients into the centre, to form soft dough. Take over with your hands, working the dough until just combined – do not overwork as this will make the dumplings hard.
3. Divide the dough into quarters, then make three round dumplings from each quarter.
4. Add dumplings to simmering stew half an hour before ready to serve, and cover with lid.
This makes 12 Large dumplings takes about 10 mins to prep.
Thank you for posting this! It sounds easy enough, however I’m never heard of suet. What is that some sort of oil?
You probably know it as Shortening, usually Beef (Fat from around the Kidneys) or Vegetable, I tend to use Vegetable as i have a number Vegetarian friends It saves chopping and changing recipes.
At TESCO’S … look in the refrigerated section for JUS*ROLL DINNER ROLLS ….
Thanks for that info Nancy, it still seem a little weird to me to drop bread rolls in to a stew during cooking. I think I’ll stick to traditional dumplings as I can adapt the recipe as needed.
Okay so I forgot to set the chicken out last night, so if I use frozen chicken how much do I need to bump the cooking time? Thank you! & should I put less broth in? Thanks so much!
I don’t adjust the cooking time. I do let it cook about 7-8 hours on low or 4-6 on high when it’s frozen. I don’t adjust the broth either, I’ve just used what was called for in the recipe and it has turned out just fine.
I already have cooked chicken left over from the night before, i want use it to make this chicken and dumplings! Do i cook it as long I’n my crock pot!?
Probably not, though I’ve never used already cooked chicken. I would cook on low for a few hours and check it. The broth thickens so when your happy with the consistency then I’d add my biscuits and turn on high until they are done. That’s what i would do. Anyone else have any ideas?
Ok awesome! Thankyou!!
Put it on low at one, went to a house warming party, came home & threw the biscuits in, did laundry….wah la! The meal is done & it is delicious.
Thank you!
-from a fresh out of college 22 year old who cannot cook and lives thousands of miles away from her mommy.
So glad you liked it! It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s good.
This is in my crockpot now!!!!:) I love chicken and dumplings so im always up to trying different ways to make it. cant wait!
how do you know when the dumplings are done?
They will be firmer and not as doughy.
I made this tonight and it was awesome. But for some reason I have tons of chicken left over. Is there a way I can make the dumplins to add to the chicken?
You might just try baking the biscuits and then adding them to your bowl right before you eat it. I had to do this the other night and it was good!
Ive skimmed threw all the previous comments an nobody asked the question i have lol, When u add the biscuits do u just set them on top of the mixture and cover to “bake” them? or mix them in ? maybe im thinking too much into it 😉
Just put them on top. In 30mins to an hour when I check to see if they are done I mix them in.
Thank you!! BTW this is Christopher’s wife 🙂 I couldnt figure out how to not comment as him! Thank u again for the quick response i plan on putting this together now!
Further to my last reply to your question about suet I thought I should post a bit more information on the off chance anyone would be trying british dumplings these can be a bit on the heavy side if you’re not used to making them. Your local butcher should be able to provide you with fresh suet.
Suet can be bought in natural form in many supermarkets. As it is the fat from around the kidneys, the connective tissue, blood and other non-fat items must be removed. It then needs to be coarsely grated to make it ready to use. It must be kept refrigerated prior to use and used within a few days of purchase, just like meat.
Pre-packaged suet sold in supermarkets is dehydrated suet. It is mixed with flour to make it stable at room temperature. Because of this, some care is needed when using it for older recipes that call for fresh suet as the proportions of flour to fat can alter. Most modern recipes stipulate packaged suet.
Vegetable suet is available in supermarkets in the United Kingdom, made from fat such as palm oil combined with rice flour. It resembles shredded beef suet, and is used as a vegetarian substitute in recipes, but with slightly different results from animal suet.
NOTE
Consumption of suet is forbidden according to the Jewish religion as it was reserved for ritual altar sacrifices. This restriction only applies to those animals which were used for sacrifices, and thus does not include wild animals such as deer.
Thank you for more information on suet. I could be wrong, but I don’t believe I have ever seen anything like that in American grocery stores. I have never even heard of it before you commented about it the first time.
Anyhow thanks again. It might prove very helpful for those visiting from places other than the U.S.
When I hear of suet, I think of the little square things you can buy at the store to set out for birds to eat. I do believe tho, that the bird suet is actually animal fat with birdseed mixed in. When I read the recipe and saw suet, I took it as a type of shortening. However, I don’t think I have seen it for human consumption in America, but I could be wrong.
my elderly mother makes the best mincemeat pies around, (but only at Thanksgiving and Christmas- its such a rich pie), and the secret ingredient to making it is using suet. This is a popular use for it.
Being from the States & living in the UK I make this a lot (reminds me of home) …. Sadly we don’t have Pillsbury here BUT thankfully the company JUS*ROLL has now come out with a canned biscuit… They are a lot thicker then pillsbury’s so I take the rolling pin & flatten them a little bit and then cut them with a pizza cutter… so this is for anyone in the UK making this…. go to TESCO’S and look in the refrigerated section for JUS*ROLL DINNER ROLLS ….
Thanks for sharing this info Nancy!
This is the most delightful meal and so easy put in the crock then let it cook add biscuits you done enjoy
I’m fixing this for supper tonight. My husband has been wanting me to fix chicken and dumplings ever since we got married (2 years ago) but I have no clue as to fix real dumplings. This is just right up my ally. Thanks so much for the recipe, can’t wait to try it out!
This looks wonderful! I am planning on adding mushrooms and corn in mine… should I add them when I put the chicken in or the biscuits? Thanks!
I’d add them in with the chicken especially if the corns frozen. They might not cook enough if you add them with the biscuits.
Can you use crescent rolls? Would they cook the same?
I have used crescent rolls before, but I didn’t add them to the crockpot I cooked them in the oven and then added them to our bowls.
I made this today and used crescent rolls. I just used my pizza cutter to cut them into strips and dropped them into the crock pot. I let them cook about an hour and a half and they did great! My husband loved it!
making this for dinner tonight!
I hope you enjoy it!
I only have butter flavored biscuits, would that work or should I wait to make this another night?
I’d give it a try. They only difference I believe would be that they would taste a bit more buttery. Hope you enjoy it.
Dumb question maybe but why not shred the chicken before adding biscuits?
I have done that before. I’ve also waited. Whichever works best at the time. 🙂
I have made this several times using uncoooked egg noodles throwing them in the last hour or two before serving. Also I have used thighs and mix maybe a can of milk to the 2 cans of soup. I just make sure there is enough juice fir cooking the noodles. I have also cooked the noodles first then added them to crock pot for 30 mins or longer so all the flavors marry together. Wonderful and even throw in some can veggies at times.
The next time I make it I plan on adding vegetables. And egg noddles are a great idea!

This may be a stupid question. When putting the soup in do you put in the water also that you would use with the soup? Or just the condenced soup?
No, not a stupid question. You just add the condensed soup. Don’t add any extra water.
I made this tonight and it was delicious (: Thanks for the recipe!
I’m so glad you liked it! Thanks for letting me know. 🙂
This looks delicious!!! Cooking it tomorrow night! Do I cook the biscuits first before adding them to crock pot or leave them doughy? Thank you!
Hi Frencesca!
You leave them doughy and add them to the crockpot. Though I have cooked my biscuits before and just added them to the top of the chicken mix after I put it in a bowl. It was just as good!
I found a recipe on Pinterest for a dry mix which is supposed to make a cream of whatever you want soup. I haven’t tested the mix out yet so this recipe will be my first time but ill let you know how it goes!
just ate my chicken and dumplings, DELICIOUS! even with the dry mix, it was so good! my boyfriend loved it, he couldnt believe it was my first time making chicken and dumplings. next step is to actually try it with my own dumplings
I’m so glad you both liked it! I will have to find and try the dry mix. Thank you for letting us know you liked it.
Dumb question but since I’m inpatient, is it okay that I stirred it before it was ready to add the biscuits? I just don’t want it to be super soupy because I like it thick!
I’m impatient too. I’ve stirred early before. 🙂 It was still delicious!
We just love this recipe…it’s so easy and comes out great…instead of using the biscuits this time were going to make mashed potatos and use the chicken as a gravy over the potato’s….I love this recipe….yum yum…
I always make mashed when I do this recipe (even with the dumplings) BUT I make the mashed a little “thicker” then usual so it dosent get real “soupy” when I add the gravy …
I have the biscuits, but in curious how mini perogies may taste in this…. What do you think?
Hi Jessyca
I’m not really sure. I’ve never used perogies before. They are kind of like a dumpling right? If so maybe if you cooked them first then added it to the chicken mix. That’s what I’d do.
Let us know if you try it!
I’ve got a cooked whole body chicken..Since it’s cooked already, should I reduce the cooking time at all? Don’t need to COOK the chicken again This sounds delicious & can’t wait to try it! Thanks for sharing the recipe. I rarely turn on the oven any more. Love crockpot cooking!!
I cooked my chicken first to make cooking time quicker, I also took extra dumplings and cooked a bit in oven to add to my one and half recipe. And added carrots and peas from can on top (before dumplings) and fresh celery mushrooms with the onion. I think its going to be great! Looks so yummy thanks for the idea! I always love dumplings with anything but dont make them very well I am hoping this will be the answer and I can use idea in other recipes
I was just wondering what you would use as a side dish to this recipe?
Hi Malissa
I don’t have any great ideas because I always struggle with this myself. I have not served a side dish with this yet because we always use it as a full meal.
Anyone else have any good ideas?
We will throw in frozen (mixed veggies) peas & carrots & I have served it also w/home made rolls! This is such a hit in our house! Easy & very yummy!
What happens if you cut up all 8 biscuits, and throw them in? I’m to lazy/don’t want to run the oven for 4 biscuits.
Nothing. 🙂 I’ve done it. It does make a lot of dumplings though and it takes longer to cook.
This was amazing. I made it last night. Everyone loved it, even my son!! Will def, be making this again.
Just made this tonight and it was delicious, definitely a keeper. Although I will definitely be adding peas and carrots to it next time, along with some more biscuits on the side. Best part of all of this, was my 14 year old son made this as I’m just getting over the flu and he wanted to be helpful. This was a perfect fit! Thanks
Hope you are feeling better. The flu is going around terribly. Good job on teaching your son to cook. That was very helpful. Glad you liked it!
Getting better every day, thanks. I just have to say my 14year old son is STILL raving about this meal and is actually looking forward to having the leftovers tonight! That hardly ever happens! 🙂
I have the tiniest crockpot available, since I normally just cook for myself, and I do not think this whole recipe would fit in it. Do you have any suggestions on how I could trim it down to fit in and be a meal just for me?
Otherwise I’m going to have to go buy a bigger one just so I can try this recipe. I’ve been so anxious to try it, sounds so delicious!!
You could half the recipe. Just half whatever the recipe calls for. Though I’ve not done it I think it should work. Hope you like it!
I just made this today for the first time and my family LOVED it! Even my super picky daughter ate everything on her plate. My husband says I “hit it out of the ballpark with this one” and my grand-daughter says she wishes she could have it every night. Thanks for a great recipe!
So glad everyone liked it! Thanks for commenting.
Im maken this right now for my boyfriend bc he lovesss chicken and dumplings…. But im maken it on the stove!!! I hope it comes out just as good…. I seen this too late to start cooing it in the crock pot!!
Made this last night..Absolutely DELICIOUS!!!

Great and easy. But try adding a little sage, tyme, and galic.
Made this tonight and it was wonderful! I read all of the comments previously and I too use frozen chicken. Came out perfect cooking for 4 hrs on high. At 3 hours is when I added my biscuits. After I added my biscuits is when I realized that they were honey butter!!! I thought “Oh No!!” but it came out really good with a touch of sweetness! Then made homemade rosemary and garlic bread…what a fabulous meal…thanks!
Looks anmzing and easy! Question though, instead of using the biscuits, can i cut up crescent roll dough from the tube/can and use instead? I have a can in my fridge so just wondering!
I’d try it. In not really sure if the doughs made different then biscuits but I don’t think it would hurt to try it. Or you could leave the crescents out of the crock pot bake them in the oven and add the to the meal afterwards. I have done that with crescent rolls before and it was good.
I made this 2 weeks ago to my sister and 4 sailors (3 big boys, and a girl)… They *killed* this and are asking for more! Double batches at once! One batch is barely enough for these eaters in my house, and it’s too easy and cheap to make! Next time, it’s for more sailor boys 😉 thanks!!!
What if it seems to runny? Isn’t suppose to be a bit thicker. I still havent put the biscuits? Thanks
Hi Andrea
Mine tends to thicken after the biscuits are added. Though it was runnier once and I couldn’t figure why, but it tasted good anyway. 🙂
When I have a batch that is a bit runny I use what is known in the UK as soup of broth mix (dry Pearl Barley, Split Yellow Pea’s, Split Green Pea’s, Marrow Fat Pea’s. Split Lentils,) Not quite sure of US measure’s but I usually start with a tablespoon (1/2 Cup I think) and as the broth mix soaks up the excess liquid add more broth mix or water to get the thickness you want.
Has anyone ever tried this with Campbell’s Chicken gravy instead of the ceam of chicken soup? I use my crockpot to make chicken & dumplins, but I only ever use chicken, the chicken gravy then I add the same amount of water as gravy. Add biscuit dough cut up for dumplins…. very tasty!
I have not, but that sounds delicious. I might have to try that. Thanks for the suggestion!
Making this now! Thank you for the recipe! 🙂 As a college student it’s always nice to find an easy meal to make that’s tasty! Crockpot recipes are always nice to come across. Being raised in the south, chicken & dumplings are obviously a favorite of mine. Hopefully it turns out as tasty as it looks! 🙂
I dont have any cream of chicken soup, and am home with a sick child, do you think the condensed cheddar cheese soup would work ok?
I’m really not sure. It might still be yummy in a non chicken and dumpling way.
I made this months ago and it was such a huge hit!! Everyone loved it…even my two little girls!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
You’re welcome!
I will be making this today. Seeing how its spring and there’s still snow on the ground.
I’m making this today, beings spring is here but the snow is falling.. its a “crockpot” kinda day! The aroma is awesome! The cream of chicken soup that I used has herbs already in the soup! I can’t wait to try it!
Sounds good making it now
Hello, I am so glad I came across this recipe. I have always wanted to make chicken and dumplings but I stink at making real dumplings, so this is great for me. I do have a question, however. When you add the biscuits does that thicken the gravy?
Hi thanks for commenting! It does seem to thicken it after the biscuits are added.
It’s in my crockpot right now. A friend made it and everyone in her family loved it.
Instead of the canned soup I am trying out a substitute. It’s a dry mix that I made this morning. Add 1-1/4 cup water to 1/3 cup mix to equal a can of cream soup. I hate how salty and processed most canned products taste, so I’m hoping this works.
This is in the crock pot at this moment and I just added the dumplings, only I made them from Bisquick since I didn’t have the refrigerator biscuits.
how would you suggest adding some veggies to this? and how much would you use?
I think you could use any veggie you wanted but I’ve used carrots and peas before. You can do fresh or frozen. I just added them when I started the crockpot.
Do they have to be flaky biscuits? I bought the regular homestyle grands biscuits by accident.
No, they don’t have to be. I’ve used the regular kind before and if was fine. Hope you enjoy it. 🙂
I’ve got this cooking in the crockpot now. My husband and I love it and this receive is easy enough for me….thank you
Would it work if I made my own dumplings?
Yes I think if would. I’ve never made my own. I would think that they would need to cook for much longer though and perhaps in another pot then added in later?
That should work with no problems, Though if you are using meat from older birds (Broilers) which can be tough compared younger birds which you will have to cook for longer on a lower heat you might have to either precook the dumplings or reduce the size of the dumpling (Remembering that the dumplings will double in size during cooking)
Do you recommend putting a cup towel across the inside of the Crockpot so this doesn’t get too watery…cooking this tomorrow
Hi Suzi
I have no experience with placing a towel under the lid. As a matter of fact I’ve never heard of that before.
Can anyone else help Suzi with this?
As this recipe is using condensed soup plus the can of chicken stock you might find that need to add liquid as sauce/gravy might tend to be a little on the thick side as it cooks but if you have added frozen veggies the extra water in them will thin out the sauce/gravy but not to a great degree.
I have only had used a tea towel when cooking every thing from scratch on the stove but never in a slow cooker as you are recycling the evaporated cooking liquid in the slow cooker .
I’m out of Chicken broth and bouillon cubes…I’m assuming a cup of water will work as an ok alternative, right?
It would work but I’m thinking it might not be as flavorful.
I’m making this right now! Its my first time using a crockpot and I’m excited to see how it turns out! Thanks for posting this!
i made this tonight and used frozen biscuits and it turned out great!!! my husband said it was the best thing i’ve ever made!! thank you!!
So glad you enjoyed it!!!
what size crock pot…I have 3
As long as your chicken will fit inside and there is room left for the broth I don’t think it matters. I have a large and a smaller crockpot. I’ve used both, but usually use the larger one.
making this tonight I so cant wait. We are all for easy crockpot recipes…
This is so yummy, the first time that I made this my husband and I ate the whole thing just between us. This is what is for dinner tonight!
I’m so glad you liked it!
My niece made this for my husband and I and we LOVED it!! I ate the leftovers for lunch! I’m making it this week…..
Has anyone tried Rhodes Dinner Rolls instead of the biscuits? Would I add them at the same time?
@ C Wright funny you ask this, I am on here to look for this answer. I am going to dethaw them and use them. I can’t find out if anyone else has had success. I will let you know!
I don’t believe anyone has said if they have used the Rhodes rolls. I have not. However, if you do use them let us know how it turns out!
Thanks for reading!
Just wondering if anyone has ever made it using a rotisserie chicken before and if I should make any adjustments?
I use a rotisserie chicken every time and I never change anything. My husband asks for this allllll the time so it must be perfect. 🙂
I have been craving chicken and dumplings for a long time. This is the first recipe I came across when I Googled it this morning. Tomorrow I am having a “medical procedure” so I am getting my crockpot ready first thing and will be coming home to the fabulous smell! Cannot wait to ‘taste’ how it turns out! (I might throw in a stalk of celery). Thanks for posting and thanks for all of the comments!!
Patty good luck on your procedure.
Here’s to a swift recovery!
I think adding celery is an excellent idea. I might just do that next time myself. Thanks for commenting. 😄
Making this tonight ! I didnt have chicken broth so I used water instead, is that ok? And will it make a noticeable difference in taste??
Thanks , can’t wait for it to be done!
My kids, hubby and I all LOVE this dish. I have made it NUMEROUS times since I found it. Making it tonight. Can’t wait to eat it. Thanks for sharing it. 🙂
Just found this and trying it tonight!!
I’m sad to say I’m a southern mama and I’ve never made chicken n dumplings… super excited!!
No matter how you make the Chicken and Dumplins — When ready — Sit that Crock Pot in the middle of your table and yell for the Family.” Dinners Ready” – Sit down together Oh put a bit of flour on your face and sweater.. the family will love it. Thank you.
Just now read that you are “The Agnostic Wife” Well I would like to add to the comment above – Gather that family around the table and bow your heads and have PRAYER…
Well aren’t you just as sweet as vinegar. 🙂
Vinegar has a use ….– – The fact that someone -( I )– mentions the word— PRAYER–sure got you all on edge.
It was not the mention of prayer. It was the fact you felt it necessary, after you happen to notice the name of my blog, to come back and comment again, to what? What was the point of that? If you pray, then by all means pray. If a meal is not complete for you and yours until you do so, go ahead. I’m not trying to stop you doing so. Your tone sure did change however when you noticed the blog name.
I found this yesterday while looking for a good crock-pot recipe for chicken and dumplings because my husband has been begging for chicken and dumplings for a long time. Sadly one of our friend can’t have onions so instead of an onion I used onion powder (onions make our friend sick but onion powder doesn’t for some reason) and seasoned to taste. I also put frozen veggies (Birdseye Mixed Vegetables with corn, carrots, green beans, and peas; 1 package) into the crock-pot to cook with the chicken. Also I sprinkled salt and pepper onto the chicken. Since the veggies kinda out weighted to broth mixture, I added about 1/2 a cup of water, 1/2 a cup of milk, and about 4 chicken bouillon cubes. After the chicken is cooked and before I add the biscuits I’m going to see how thick the broth mixture is, and if I need to I’ll add some corn starch to thicken it some. I hope this turns out really good, since I added so much to it. I’ll let you know.
The way I’ve made it turned out Amazing!!! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. This is going to be a repeat dinner for the crock-pot. Again Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you for letting us know how it turned out! I’m so glad you liked it. It’s a really good, but easy thing to keep in the dinner rotation.. 🙂
So happy to have found this — it’s in my crockpot now. I used a can of cream of chicken and a can of cream of celery soup instead of 2 cans of chicken; I’m really looking forward to dinnertime!
My husband and I loved this mostly the dumlings
Have you ever tried using crescent rolls instead of biscuits? Just wondering if it works.
Made this tonight for the first time – total success! I used 6 biscuits instead of 4…and frozen tenderloins. Great recipe for today – we got about 6 inches of snow in Ohio! Take care!
I have this finishing up in the crock pot now, this is the third time I have made it as it has become my favorite crock pot recipe. As a college student, recipes that are quick to prepare and actually taste good are the best ones. I always add frozen breasts, but 2 out of the 3 times I’ve made the recipe I had prepared it the night before and stuck it in the fridge overnight. In the morning I put it on warm while I’m getting ready to avoid shocking the crock, and then turn it on to cook as I am running out the door for class. I forgot to put in the butter the second time I made it, and did not notice a difference. I also preferred it with a yellow onion instead of a white one. The second time I made it I added frozen peas with the full can of biscuits, but it took 3-4 hours extra. I liked the peas, but I haven’t quite figured out the timing. This time my 4 qt crock pot is about an inch from the top after the biscuits, so I think I’m going to cook the peas separately and add mix them in after I’ve made a little space. For those who are sensitive or allergic to MSG like I am, I have figured out that the Healthy Request version of Campbell’s Cream of ____ Soup is MSG free.
I replaced one of the cans of cream of chicken w/ a can of cream of celery, season chicken w/ johny’s, add half a can of white wine, pinch or 2 of pepper flakes, add carrots w/ onions and add peas at the end. DE-LISH!! lol thanks for the recipe

oh wow!! me AND my picky ass kids loved every bite! thank you!!
I made this tonight, and let me just say it delicious!! Thank you for sharing this recipe. It’s super easy and perfect for a cold Sunday night. ☺️☺️
I was wondering if I could use cresent rolls instead of biscuits.I’m trying to get rid of them before they go bad
This never lasts too long in my house! The cooker is practically licked clean by the end of dinner 🙂
Hi I just tried this for dinner and let me tell you my kids who never eat anything loved it. I did a couple different things. The only thing that was a little hard was….after it slow cooked for five hours I went to add the biscuits on the top.and it took forever to cook so I took them out baked them and put them back in, I would have liked to cook it all together ‘do you have any tips for me for next time? Other than that it was the biggest hit here and trust me my kids do not like nothing but burgers, pizza, chicken, and fast food….so thank you sooooo much
Hi Michelle! Glad your family liked it. I’ve baked them and added them back in myself before too. I’ve put them in the crockpot to cook for an hour or more. To make sure they get done. I’d rather them be more done than doughy.
My son loves this recipe . He requests it for dinner every week .
Is it ok if I used frozen chicken ? Didn’t have time to thaw 😕
I have used frozen chicken before and it comes out fine.
If I started this in the morning before I went to work would it be ok to put the biscuits in at lunch time (5-6 hours later) & cook for an additional 3 1/2 hours before I get home from work or would it ruin the texture of the biscuits? If I do that would it be better to use the whole 8 pack can or stick with the 4 pack (we can buy 1/2 tubes)? Do you put the biscuits on top or do you stir them in when you first put them in? I would be able to put them on top for the first 1 1/2 hours then have my husband stir them in for the last 2 hours or do you think that because I’m cooking for 3 1/2 hours they’ll cook thru enough if I stir them in for the whole 3 1/2 hours. I’ll be adding mixed vegetables at the beginning too.
So… noticed the theme of your blog is being an agnostic’s wife? Begs the question, are you SURE that the recipe required 2 tablespoons of butter and not 4? You really can’t objectively know that to be true! If your not sure than I may not be either, I suppose I’ll head back to one of the million blogs that claims being a good-‘ole-country-wife’s crock pot chicken and dumplings recipe. At least they are sure. 🙂
Yes, if you need someone to tell you what’s true or not then it’s best you move along to those blogs that don’t require you to think. There you will be told how to think, what to think about as well as where to get the rules for thinking and feeling about the things you’re supposed to be thinking or doing something about. 🙂
Wow, didn’t you people come here for a recipe and not a religious fight?
Anyway, do you think I can make this on the stove?
From a fellow agnostic 🙂
Yes, i think this would work well on the stove. 👋 Hello fellow agnostic.

Making this as we speak. I’ve been using my crock pot a lot lately but it’s my first time making chicken & dumplings. Can’t wait to surprise my hubby. But I just put the dumplings in about 15 minutes ago. How can I tell when they are finally done?! Thank you!
I made a batch and a half so I’d have left overs in the morning, and my fiancé ended up eating half the pot by himself! Between us and my mother, it was gone lol. I’ll definitely be making this again, thanks for the awesome recipie!

My family loved this! I will cook again for sure! Only thing I did different was cut chicken up before I put biscuits in. Doubled recipe and it came out perfect!!!!
Omg very good . before i added the dumplings .I flattened them and sprinkled Parm cheese and then rolled them and then I dropped then in .so very good
My boyfriend loves chicken and dumplings, it’s his favorite meal. The way he’s used to eating chicken and dumplings when his mom made it just wasn’t that good to me so when he asked me to make it for him last night I was a bit lost. When I found this I decided to give it a try and I was not disappointed. This was delicious and he loved it! Will definitely have this recipe again!
Making this as we speak. I threw in a packet of Italian dressing…should be goo. Thanks for the recipe!!!
I just made this tonight and it was fabulous! I did make a few tweaks, using what I had on hand..I used frozen chicken, cooked on high 4 hours…then dropped to low. Pulled chicken out, shredded it and dropped back in the crock. At that point I also added a can of corn and carrots…and cooked for another hour on low. Since I didn’t have any refrigerator biscuits on hand…I ended up making Bisquick quick drop biscuits and some of us broke them up in our bowls…and some just ate them on the side.
The recipe is so good and versatile…I may even try serving over noodles instead of biscuits next time.
I added egg noodles in place of the biscuits. Turned out really good.
Hi was wondering how many chicken breast you use. I have the costco ones and they don’t have a weight on them.
It depends on how thick they are. There are usually 3 big chicken breasts in the chicken I use.
This recipe sounds delish and I will try it. Just wondering about the title of your blog–which sounds like you are the wife of an agnostic–just curious…
Hi Phyllis,
At the start of this blog, I was indeed the wife of a new agnostic. I am now the wife of an atheist, whom is an atheist herself.
Thank you for stopping by 🙂
Yummy! I am making this soon. =) But would this work better in a 4 qt or 8 qt crockpot?
Oh boy, should I have not mixed after adding the cut up biscuit dough? It looks like all the dough just “melted” for lack of a better word. I don’t see any little pillows of dough left

So before serving, you want to stir the dumplings into everything?
Made this tonight in the crock pot. It made a great cold weather dish, and the house smells delicious. Super easy too.
I substituted egg noodles for the biscuits and its really good.
The traditional recipe here is fine yes…
But I like flavor!!
I used the cream of chicken w/ herbs
I added:
-celery
-carrots
– garlic powder
– onion powder
– celery salt
– poultry seasoning
– milk
– flour with chicken broth- for thickening
– homemade egg noodles.
Much more flavor!!!
Would it matter if I leave this cooking for 10 hours on low?
Would it matter if I cooked this on low for 10 hours instead of 8?
As long as your chicken is done, I don’t see a issue with it.
It doesn’t fit in a 4 quart slow cooker. Luckily it was sitting on a cookie sheet just in case.
Do you suggest cooking it for 8 hours if the chicken is defrosted? I was thinking of cooking it on high. Does it make a difference? Thanks
I have the chicken, broth and soups cooking now in the crockpot, in four hours I need to leave for a 3 hour meeting and wanted dinner ready when I get home. Would it mess up the dumplings to put them in before I go to the meeting and let them cook on low for 3 hours?
Update. I put them biscuits in before leaving. They cooked with mix for 3 hours. It was by far the best we have ever had. Thanks so much!!!
Not only was this easy but it was delicious! I added a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and uncooked diced potatoes. Will definitely be making again!
I’m going g to try this tomorrow
Has anyone ever substituted cream of mushroom for cream of chicken
