Rhinestone Cowboy

Are you an Elvis fan? I like a lot of his music, it’s good. I like the movies he has played in, they are good. Let’s face it, he died two months before I was born, so by the time I remember listening to music, I don’t remember the music being by the King of Rock and Roll. However, the AH did listen to him as a kid and he remembers when Elvis died. And he likes him a lot and it is for that reason that I found myself in a bar called the Rhinestone Cowboy, which I can’t say without thinking about this song.

Sadly, I do remember listening to Rhinestone Cowboy as a kid. Not a great song I gotta say.

Anyway, got side tracked. I found myself in the Rhinestone Cowboy on Friday night, with the AH, and a few other people watching an Elvis impersonator.

He was entertaining, but I found myself looking around at the handful of bar patrons that either came to see him on that night or who happened to happen into that bar on the night an Elvis impersonator was there. I had expected to see the modern version of Bubba and Sissy from Urban Cowboy.

As I looked around I came to realize that I might have been the youngest person there. I pointed this out to the AH, who I might add, had noticed this himself. I made a joke about needing a cane to get in, and then a man walked out of the mens room with…. a cane. What I’m trying to say is everyone was old. I don’t mean that badly, just that it seems Elvis has not lost his fans that were around the first time to see him, and I found myself smack dab in the middle of them.

I don’t go to bars often. As a matter of fact I can count on my hand the number of times I’ve been in one and I’ve never been in one like the Rhinestone Cowboy. I had a nice time. The AH had a nice time. Everyone seemed to have a nice time.

That was my crazy Friday night on the town. How about you? You been to a bar that is named after a not so great country song? How about a bar that is full of old(older = 60+) people and an impersonating Elvis?

P.S. I’m no spring chicken and I have nothing against mingling with the older crowd, just so you know.

Funny, I was born 3 weeks after Elvis died. Wasn’t much of a fan of his music or his acting, but I’m a fan of what he did for rock n’ roll,

However, Im a fan of Classic Rock, from the late sixties to early nineties, with some eighties Euro-Pop thrown in for good measure. However, I was listening to my favourite radio station a few weeks back, classic rock of course, and Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana came on. It was then I realized that I was becoming part of that crowd that will soon need that cane to get around. Hell, I just got my first pair of glasses not more than two months ago.

When you see you favourite artists with gray, white or missing hair, you know you can never go back again.

But I love it. I’m looking forward to becoming a classic myself.

Actually it 3 weeks BEFORE Elvis died. My bad.

    • I think I might be a bit bummed turning 35. I remember when my mom was 34 and I thought she was old.

I have noticed that some of my favorite artists have aged at bit. I was watching tv the other night and I wanted to know a bit more about the host. I goggled him and discovered he was my age. Holy Hell that was an eye opener for some reason. I had him pegged for older. Now I wonder if people think that about me! 🙂

I look at people and shows from my youth: Family Ties, Full House, Family Matters, Saved by the Bell. These people are old and graying. Musicians like Brian May, Phil Collins, Bono and Sting. These guys are as classic as their music. I say embrace the aging process. It’ll help the time go by better.

      • I watched all those shows too! And you are right everyone in them is aging.

But…but…I how can I be old enough to be married with children, a husband and a mortgage? How’d that happen? I still feel like I should just be graduating high school. That is until I get up in the morning and my bones creak and pop and remind me that, hello, you are closer to 40 than not. Whaa! 🙂
